Welcome back to class. This is Drew from The Terpene Institute.
Today’s topic is: Do terpenes get you high? That’s a great question, and the answer might surprise you. I’m here to tell you the truth about whether terpenes actually get you high.
So here’s the question: Do terpenes get you high? The answer is generally no… but kind of yes. Let’s break it down.
When people ask if terpenes get you high, they’re almost always talking about cannabis. Terpenes by themselves do not get you high. If you smoke them, drink them, or ingest them in any way, you’re not going to get stoned like you would from THC. What they can do, however, is make you dizzy. Whether you call that “high” really depends on your definition.
Terpenes are basically hydrocarbons — similar to things like acetone, gasoline, or nail polish remover. If you sit there and breathe in gasoline or nail polish remover for a long time, you’ll eventually get lightheaded and dizzy. I personally wouldn’t call that being high — I’d call it being poisoned, because it’s not an enjoyable experience. But you definitely feel a head change. I’ve seen people describe breathing straight terpenes as being “high,” so in that narrow sense, the answer would be yes. But it’s no different than huffing nail polish or a Sharpie.
In the normal, everyday sense of the term, do terpenes get you high? No. People aren’t buying terpenes to huff them or drink them to get stoned — it doesn’t work that way. Can they make you dizzy? Yes — so don’t sit there and breathe straight from the bottle. It’s not pleasant. If you want to get high, go buy some weed.
The real question most people should be asking is: Do terpenes help your high? Do they combine with THC and actually make you higher? That’s a completely different video — and one I’ve already made.
The Terpene Institute is all about giving you a common-sense approach to terpenes so you can cut through all the bullshit in the industry and make better-informed decisions — whether you buy my products or someone else’s. I just want to help the right people and make sure everyone is making smart choices in this space.
If you want to try some of my terpenes, head over to MrExtractor.com. We’ve got tons of them at great prices. But first, go watch some of the other videos and educate yourself.
We’ll see you in the next one.
Terpenes are one of the largest and most diverse classes of natural compounds on Earth. Over 20,000 different terpenes have been identified across the plant kingdom — from the piney scent of α-pinene in pine trees to the citrus notes of limonene in lemons, and the sweet, fruity aromas in many cannabis strains.
In cannabis, terpenes are produced in the same trichomes that produce cannabinoids (THC, CBD, CBG, etc.). Because they are physically present together on the plant, it’s easy to assume they all contribute to the “high.” In reality, they are chemically and functionally distinct:
- Cannabinoids (like THC) interact directly with the body’s endocannabinoid system and are responsible for psychoactive effects.
- Terpenes are volatile hydrocarbons that primarily interact with scent receptors in your nose and can influence how cannabinoids are experienced through something called the entourage effect — they may enhance or modulate the overall experience, but they do not cause intoxication on their own.
Multiple peer-reviewed studies have confirmed that isolated terpenes show no psychoactive properties in humans or animals. When you spray or mix Mr Extractor’s 100% pure botanical terpenes onto flower, pre-rolls, or concentrates, you are simply adding back (or enhancing) the natural aroma and flavor profile — without any risk of a high.
Our formulations are:
- 100% pure botanical terpenes sourced from plants
- Additive-free — no PG, VG, PEG, MCT, or synthetic carriers
- Lab-grade isolates that are GC-MS tested for purity and molecular accuracy
- Engineered for batch-to-batch consistency and long-term shelf stability
- Fully supported by third-party lab reports and Certificates of Analysis on every batch
This is why growers, extractors, and consumers have trusted Mr Extractor since 2014 to deliver loud, true-to-strain flavor without compromising the experience they actually want.
