According to Drew in this video, mangoes do not meaningfully get you higher. The rumor comes from myrcene, a terpene found in mangoes, but the amount in a mango is not enough to create the stronger or longer-lasting effect people often claim.
People say mangoes make you higher because mangoes contain myrcene, and myrcene is also found in many strain profiles. Drew explains that the theory sounds believable, but real-world terpene testing does not support mangoes creating a noticeable high-boosting effect.
Myrcene is one of many terpenes found in nature and in strain-style aroma profiles. In the video, Drew explains that while myrcene is part of the mango rumor, working with pure myrcene directly does not show the dramatic high-enhancing effect people claim from eating mangoes.

Do mangoes really get you higher when you smoke weed? Well, the answer is gonna surprise you, and it has to do with terpenes. My name is Drew, owner of MrExtractor.com, and my terpenes have been in millions of pens across the country for years. I’m here to tell you the truth about whether mangoes actually get you higher, in this week’s episode: “Do Mangoes Get You High?” from The Terpene Institute.
Okay, okay, so do mangoes help you get high, or do they make you higher, or does it make the high last longer? This is an old one, and interestingly enough, it has to do with my business and today’s technology. So we’re gonna explain that a little better. Now, this is a really old rumor. It goes back a long time: that if you eat a mango, it’s gonna get you higher for longer.
Now, terpenes in the industry right now, we know a lot about terpenes because there’s a lot of research going on, and it’s being used in the industry, and there’s a lot of testing. That’s not what was going on a long time ago. There was a small amount of testing that was going on. And what they had found was that mangoes are high in a terpene called Myrcene. And Myrcene is also a terpene that is found in cannabis.
And the thought was that Myrcene has some effect on your body, so that when you eat a mango, Myrcene goes into your body. And then when you get high, the THC interacts with the Myrcene and it gets you higher, longer, and so forth.
Unfortunately, that’s kind of true, but the fact is, the whole thing is not true. Here’s how we can tell. Nowadays, we’re analyzing all the terpenes. We know there’s tons of terpenes in cannabis, there’s tons of terpenes in nature. The Myrcene in a mango really isn’t that much Myrcene, and it really doesn’t have an effect on your body in order to get you high like that. And the simplest way to test that is we make pens with pure Myrcene.
Now, if Myrcene was going to do something to it, taking pure THC, mixing it with pure terpenes, and smoking it for a long time, you’d be like, “Wow dude, I’ve been high a long time. I’m not just taking trace amounts of terpenes and the smell of a mango, and putting it through a hundred ninety pounds of body, through my digestive system and my liver and everything. I’m taking pure Myrcene and putting it directly into my bloodstream through my lungs, combining it with THC. I should be higher, longer, or more noticeably higher, or something.”
And the fact is, that’s just not what we’re finding. So this is an old rumor that goes way back before terpene testing, before we were using Myrcene with THC. Fact is, unfortunately, it just doesn’t get you higher.
But what I can tell you does get you higher: using terpenes in your pens. The reason is that you are able to take the THC and dilute it less by using terpenes. And then you do get an entourage effect. Now, there’s another video that we have: “Do Terpenes Get You High?” And that’s going to explain a little bit more about the entourage effect with terpenes, with other terpenes, and using terpenes with THC.
When you take terpenes and you just smell a bottle of terpenes, you’re gonna get dizzy, and you’re gonna get a buzz. And when you vaporize terpenes, you’re gonna get the same little buzz, and it is gonna mix in with the THC. I wouldn’t say that it’s getting you higher. I would say it’s really akin to huffing gasoline, if anything. They’re hydrocarbons, like rubbing alcohol, and nail polish, and gasoline. And when you breathe them, you just get a little lightheaded.
So if you think that that’s what you mean by getting high, when you take that little lightheadedness you get from just inhaling a bottle of terpenes, and then you mix it with being high, it’s gonna seem like you’re getting higher, okay? So I hate to disprove this one for you, but at least you’re not shoveling mangoes in your mouth wondering why you’re not getting high anymore.
The Terpene Institute is just an institution founded on helping people get a common-sense understanding of terpenes, how they relate to the industry, how you can help sick people, and how you can make money, and how you can avoid all the bullshit out there. There is so much bullshit out there. My name is Drew, I’m the owner of MrExtractor.com, and I’ve been making terpene profiles for years. My product is in millions of pens across the country. And if anybody knows what they’re talking about on a common-sense level, it would be me.
So, please enjoy these videos. Learn a little bit, go out there, help some people, make some money. Go watch some of the other stuff, all right? Thanks for watching, I’ll see you soon.
